Ungrammaticality and Extra-Grammaticality in Natural Language Understanding Systems

چکیده
Among the components included in Natural Language Understanding (NLU) systems is a grammar which spec i f i es much o f the l i n g u i s t i c s t ruc tu re o f the ut terances tha t can be expected. However, i t is ce r ta in tha t inputs that are ill-formed with respect to the grammar will be received, both because people regularly form ungra=cmatical utterances and because there are a variety of forms that cannot be readily included in current grammatical models and are hence "extra-grammatical". These might be rejected, but as Wilks stresses, "...understanding requires, at the very least, ... some attempt to interpret, rather than merely reject, what seem to be ill-formed utterances." Looking hard: Eye tracking for detecting grammaticality of automatically compressed sentences
Natural language processing (NLP) tools are often developed with the intention of easing human processing, a goal which is hard to measure. Eye movements in reading are known to reflect aspects of the cognitive processing of text (Rayner et al., 2013). We explore how eye movements reflect aspects of reading that are of relevance to NLP system evaluation and development. This becomes increasingl...
متن کاملProcessing grammatical and ungrammatical center embeddings in English and German: A computational model
Previous work has shown that in English ungrammatical center embeddings are more acceptable and easier to process than their grammatical counterparts (Frazier, 1985; Gibson & Thomas, 1999). A well-known explanation for this preference for ungrammatical structures is based on working-memory overload: the claim is that the prediction for an upcoming verb phrase is forgotten due to memory overload...
متن کاملReceptive grammatical knowledge of familiar content words and inflection in 16-month- olds
This study examines 16-month-olds’ understanding of word order and inflectional properties of familiar nouns and verbs. Infants preferred grammatical sentences over ungrammatical sentences when the ungrammaticality was cued by both misplaced inflection and word order reversal of nouns and verbs. Infants were also sensitive to inflection alone as a cue to grammaticality, but not word order alone...
متن کاملThe Performance of Iranian EFL Learners in Producing and Recognizing Idiom-Containing Sentences
This study aimed to investigate how Iranian EFL learners performed in producing sentences containing idioms and whether they had any problems in producing such sentences. This query, subsequently, raised the question of whether idioms influenced the participants’ grammaticality judgment on idiom-containing sentences. For this purpose, firstly, the writings of 24 learners were investigated for a...
متن کاملUnderstanding Task Design Trade-offs in Crowdsourced Paraphrase Collection
Linguistically diverse datasets are critical for training and evaluating robust machine learning systems, but data collection is a costly process that often requires experts. Crowdsourcing the process of paraphrase generation is an effective means of expanding natural language datasets, but there has been limited analysis of the trade-offs that arise when designing tasks. In this paper, we pres...
